       CV      Artists

Born 1962 in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. Lives and works in Welligton, New Zealand.

From the-mid 1980's Richard Reddaway has exhibited consistently in New Zealand and abroad. His stacked, tumbling, interlocking small figures and his overlapping photomontages of crouching figures were particularly resonant with critical interest in bodily transformations during the 1990's.

Richard is interested in constructing notions about the relationship between things. On a formal level, he has been exploring the space between architecture and the art object, willfully conflating "Chaos Theory" (the shorthand name for a set of scientific and mathematical theories that attempt to describe the behavior of complexity) and the cultural theories of George Bataille. Through the means of the "uncertain object" he attempts to create theoretical and philosophical positions from which to question our understanding of the world.

Richard has studied at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand), RMIT (Australia), and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Germany). He is a senior lecturer at Massey University School of Fine Arts, Wellington, New Zealand, and has served repeatedly on the Creative New Zealand visual arts panel and as arts advisor to the Wellington Sculpture Trust.
