A Billy Apple gallery abstract is a painting or drawing based on the floorplan of the space in which it is (or was first) exhibited. It may be purchased from a gallerist or commissioned by a collector. As site specific works, they point out the idiosyncratic character of the various spaces they occupy and depict.
Works of this nature have a long history in Apple's practice, beginning with a 1969 floor plan of his not-for profit space, Apple at 161 West 23rd St NYC. They include works based on The Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam and Roger Williams Contemporary, Auckland.
